A Day with Mum
Saturday, December 20

Went on an excursion with Mum today. It was quite fun, really. We went on a tour coach and pretty much visited farms and gardens around Melbourne. I haven't been on a road trip for quite a while, and to see it all again was a refreshing experience.

To start off our day, we went to a park near Mt Dandenong to feed the birds. There were quite a few breeds - the Galahs, the Australian King Parrots, Crimson Roselles, but my ultimate favourite was the cockatoos.

Don't be fooled by their looks! They were actually quite violent - one of the cockatoos actually pierced me in several parts of my arm! But man, are they cute. Just looking at those beady eyes, and I can forgive them for just about anything. I know I'm pathetic, but aren't they just gorgeous?

Next, we visited the Warrantina Lavender Farm, where they harvest lavenders. There, we met a nice lady called Annemarie. She showed us how they harvest the lavenders - the cutting, the drying and the filtering. It looked quite simple but I doubt that it actually was that simple.

The whole farm was so beautiful. The experts are right, the scent of lavenders definitely keeps you calm. I was soothed even at the sight of the beautiful flowers and antiquties, what with the scent of a farm full of lavenders! Then, it was time to fill some of our hungry stomaches!

We went to a Peach farm, and a tour guy there started showing us around. We were accompanied by this very cute girl and some very adorable dogs! I don't know what is it with dogs, but I just love dogs.

We ate some peaches, nectarines and apricots too. Frankly, I'm not much of a 'fruit' person. But I gotta say, their fruits aren't bad. Fresh from the trees, they were crunchy and quite delicious. We were also brought to the factory where they package the fruits. The tour guide explained to us how they package the fruits and how they clean them. Believe it or not, to clean the fruits properly, they actually clean them with chlorine! But not to worry, they rinse the fruits with water after that process.

With our stomaches still full, we headed off to the Blue Hills Cherry Farm.

We were given a bucket to fill it with as many cherries as we like. Down at the farm, we were also allowed to eat as much cherries as we want. Mum and I spent some mother and daughter time under a cherry tree and started picking cherries and talking about random things.

It was a fun time for both of us; it had been far too long since we spent some good time together. It was nice for me. Laughing with my mum, doing the random talk - it was great. I can't wait to spend another day like this.
